3 Self-Publishing Secrets Every Faith-Based Author Must Know

Hey there, sister in Christ! Are you ready to learn some game-changing secrets about self-publishing your faith-based books? If you've been struggling to figure out how to write and self-publish your book, if you're wondering where to even get started with this vision God has given you, then honey, you're in the right place. In this chapter, we're going to dive deep into three self-publishing secrets that you absolutely must know before you start your journey as a faith-based author online. So grab your notebook, say a quick prayer, and let's get started!

Secret #1: Get Clear on Your Niche as a Faith-Based Author

Now, I know what you're thinking. "Stephanie, what in the world is a niche?" Don't worry, sis, I've got you. A niche is simply the specific problem you solve as a faith-based author. And let me tell you, getting clear on this is crucial.

When I first started out in 2008, I was all over the place. I was writing Bible study guides, books about anxiety, how to be a Christian in college, how to make movies... you name it, I probably wrote about it. And you know what happened? People were confused. They didn't know what I was an expert in.

Here's the problem with that approach: When people are buying a book to solve a problem, they want the expert. They don't want someone who's dipping and dabbling in everything under the sun. They want the go-to person for their specific issue. If you're all over the place like I was, people start thinking, "Wait, didn't she just release a daily devotional? Now she's writing about anxiety? And wasn't there a documentary too? What is this girl doing?"

The solution? You've got to get really focused and clear in your niche. This allows you to become the dominant voice in that niche and be the go-to expert people turn to for solutions to their problems.

So, here's what you need to do: Choose your niche before you even start your book business online. Base it on:

  1. Who God made you to be
  2. The problem He equipped you to solve
  3. What you actually want to solve for your readers

In my Godlywood Girl University, I have a whole beautiful framework in the Writer's Academy (Module 1) that takes you through discovering your niche. You answer questions, do some market research, and really nail down your specific area of expertise.

Once I got clear on my niche here at Godlywood Girl, everything changed. Now, instead of jumping from fitness books to inspirational romance novels to daily devotionals, I write book after book solving the same problem for the same reader. I'm focused on helping you step into your purpose as a faith-based author. That's my niche, and I stick to it.

Secret #2: Build Your Audience of Book Readers in Your Niche

Alright, secret number two is a game-changer: Build your audience of book readers in your niche before you start your business online as a faith-based author.

What's an audience of book readers? It's a group of people who have raised their hand and said, "Hey, I want to buy the types of books you write." I know what you're thinking - "Stephanie, there's no way to do that!" But trust me, there is.

When I first started in 2008, I had no audience. Zero. Zilch. Nada. And let me tell you, trying to sell books to crickets is not fun. I was out there doing sales calls, going to churches, trying every promotion under the sun. It was exhausting and frustrating.

But here's the secret: Build your audience first. As soon as you choose your niche and know what God wants you to write about, start building that audience of people who want to buy your books.

Now, you might be thinking, "Stephanie, how in the world do I do that?" Well, let me tell you what not to do. Don't rely on Facebook groups, Instagram, or even Amazon. Why? Because with social media, you're at the mercy of algorithms. One day you're reaching thousands, the next day you're talking to yourself. (Trust me, I know - I have 33,000 followers on Instagram, but if the algorithm decides they don't want to show my content, it's useless!)

Instead, here's what I want you to do: Build your audience through email marketing. Yes, good old-fashioned email. Why? Because when you have an email list, you control who sees your content. When I release a new book, I can reach out directly to my 10,000 subscribers. No algorithm can stop that!

Here's how to build that email list:

  1. Create a lead magnet - a free micro book or 30-page ebook you can give away in exchange for someone's email address.
  2. Set up a squeeze page to give that book away. This keeps you legally compliant with the CAN-SPAM Act in the United States. (We can't just send marketing emails to anyone - people have to opt into our list.)
  3. Send value-based emails every week to build a relationship with your list.

If you want to know exactly how to do this, in Godlywood Girl University, I have an email marketing workshop where I take you through the step-by-step process. I show you how to write broadcast emails, create value-based content, set up your automation sequence - all of it. I even give you the templates I use here at Godlywood Girl. It's all there in the marketing and traffic toolkit.

Trust me, when you have an audience ready and waiting, launching your books becomes so much easier. You'll have people there who actually want to purchase from you as soon as you've written your first book.

Secret #3: Learn How to Sell Your Books to Your Audience of Book Readers

Now, this last secret might ruffle some feathers, but it's so important. You need to learn how to sell your books to your audience before you even start your faith-based book business online.

I know, I know. As faith-based authors, sometimes we shy away from selling. But here's the truth: Your book matters. It's important. It's going to help somebody step into the fullness of life God created for them. John 10:10 is for everybody who knows the Lord as their personal Savior - fullness of life is our blessing, our birthright. Your book is going to help people step into that promise.

But here's the thing, sis: Once you write that book, your audience isn't going to know to buy it unless you sell it to them. I say this passionately because, all glory to Jesus, I've helped over a thousand women start their faith-based businesses online. And I've had some students who are very resistant to selling. They create these amazing books, these amazing solutions, but when it comes to promoting them, they freeze up.

So, before you even write your first book, learn how to sell. Develop that skill set. There are many ways to do it:

  • In Godlywood Girl University, I teach the 20-step sales letter formula.
  • You can use Russell Brunson's webinar formula.
  • There's Jeff Walker's launch sequence.
  • Louis Howes has a sales sequence.
  • Ryan Deiss has the Gain, Logic, Fear sequence (I think he calls it the Invisible Selling Machine).
  • Frank Kern has the Cash Machine sequence.

It really doesn't matter how you sell, as long as you learn to sell. You need to develop this skill set. Please hear me on this: The book only changes people's lives if you sell it to them.

One of my favorite ways to sell books is through a sales funnel. It's a series of web pages designed to take someone from being interested in your book to actually buying it. I like using a tripwire funnel: lead magnet, tripwire offer, core product offer, and follow-up email sequence. If you want to learn how to do this step-by-step, check out my School of Business in Godlywood Girl University.

But that's just one method. You can also do webinars, coaching calls, or DM marketing. The important thing is to learn how to sell first. That way, once you've written your book, you already know how to serve people the solution. Your book readers are there waiting to buy from you - you just have to promote to them.

Wrapping It Up

So there you have it, sis. The three secrets to self-publishing success as a faith-based author:

  1. Get clear on your niche
  2. Build your audience of book readers
  3. Learn how to sell your books

If you apply these three secrets, I promise you, your journey as a faith-based author will be so much smoother. You'll have clarity on what you're writing, an audience eager to read your words, and the skills to get your books into the hands of those who need them most.

ABOUT GODLYWOOD GIRL

Hey sis! It's your girl Stephanie Rodnez, founder & CEO of Godlywood Girl, and I want to welcome you to the Godlywood Girl sisterhood. If you're a woman who loves the Lord and wants to live His greatest purpose for your life as a Christian entrepreneur, then I created this website especially for you.

I started Godlywood Girl in 2013 as a way to help myself heal from the heartache and trauma of failing at my first business. You see, I was a filmmaker creating movies for Christian youth groups, but a series of bad decisions and mismanagement led to me almost having to declare bankruptcy on my first business.

For two years I sat in depression from the failure of that business, until one day, a video by Dr. ET Thomas inspired me to get back up and step into my purpose again. As a result, I got back to my God-given purpose as a Christian entrepreneur, and Godlywood Girl was born. My goal with Godlywood Girl is to connect you with the resources you need to achieve your greatest purpose for Christ as a Christian entrepreneur.

Whether you're just getting started on your journey, or you're a seasoned purposepreneur in the biz, I want to welcome you to the Godlywood Girl sisterhood. You are my sister, and I can't wait to connect with you online.

xox,

Stephanie (Godlywood Girl) Rodnez
